Fediverse Site Changes
We're consolidating servers to reduce costs, affecting our Peertube and 2TonWaffle forums. The forums will shut down due to low activity, while Peertube will relaunch under a new URL with curated content. The Owncast instance will also move, providing a fresh start. Changes will occur gradually.
We've been happily using several ActivityPub systems like Peertube, NodeBB, and Owncast for the past several years. Now, you might be thinking I'm planning to stop using one or more of them, but that's not why I'm writing this post.
I'm consolidating some of the many servers I've been using. While having three separate servers for different platforms may not seem significant, I was experimenting with different software over the years. Recently, I've wanted to reduce the monthly costs.
Therefore, I'll be shutting down at least two servers, affecting our 2TonWaffle forums and the Peertube instance. The forums will be shut down as they aren't driving organic traffic or interaction. It's a nice feature for a community, but there's no reason to keep it if it's not being used.
For Peertube, I'll review every video and decide what to upload to a new Peertube instance under a new URL. This allows me to consolidate the content more effectively.
Our Owncast instance will be moved to the consolidated server. I understand these changes might disrupt followers, but I see them as a fresh start. These changes won't happen all at once. I'll focus on moving Peertube first, then Owncast, and finally shutting down the forums. Our main website will remain the hub for posts and comments.
